Many walks can be enjoyed from Burnside without a car. A level(ish) stroll to Threlkeld along the Old Keswick-Penrith railway line is a great way to stretch the legs; with the real chance of spotting a Red Squirrel or Roe Deer in the woods or leaping Salmon or Brown Trout in the River Greta. Once in Threlkeld you might like to call at the Horse & Farrier or Salutation Inn for a pint of Jennings Bitter/glass of wine and a Bar Meal too. Latrigg or Walla Crag to Ashness Bridge, with great views of Derwentwater are easy/moderate walks that can be taken directly from Burnside. While Blencathra and the Skiddaw Massif will require a full days effort from the more dedicated hill walker.
There are also a number of great mountain bike routes possible from Burnside too. A circuit of Blencathra via the Old Railway, Threlkeld, Skiddaw House, Mosedale and the Mill Inn or a run on Keswick's Old Coach Road behind Threlkeld Quarry are possibly among the best MTB routes in the North Lakes.
